Mrs. Hotchkin's 4th Grade Class

We work hard every day.  Please be sure your child is well rested, has a good breakfast and a healthy lunch.

Continue to check your child's agenda book and red folder each evening.  Be sure your child's homework is complete and correct.  Also your child should read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. As they finish a book they will then take the quiz in the classroom.  It takes 10 points to have an A+ for the quarter.

Math
We are working on place value concepts.  The student's need to be able to write any number in standard, expanded and word form.  We cover numbers up to 1 million.  We also have learned how to find 10 times more or 10 times less than a number.  They should be able to round to any place in a number.  We will now begin adding and subtracting number to 1 million and solving multi-step word problems.
ELA
We will work on using text evidence to answer questions about a piece of literature or informational text.  We are finishing up "I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic" and will begin using our Storyworks magazine to work on our skills.  We continue to work on good writing skills and will be writing opinion papers along with narratives and informational writing.  We work on grammar skills weekly and will begin having weekly quizzes that go along with the skills we have practiced.  We have a weekly spelling unit that the kids work on all week with a test on Friday.  We also will begin our next vocabulary unit which we will cover over the next 2 weeks.
Science
We are learning about plants and the function of each part of the plant.  We will be doing a couple of different experiment/activities to explore these concepts.

Social Studies
We begin learning about the regions of the United States.  The first region we will study in the Northeast.
